Chives are the common name for Allium schoenoprasum, an edible species of the genus Allium.
It is a perennial plant, widespread in nature throughout Europe, Asia and North America.

The name of the species comes from the Greek rope (sword grass) and leek (leek). The English name, chives, comes from the French word cive, from cepa, the Latin word for onion. The chives, commonly called wild chives.

Chives have a wide variety of culinary uses, such as traditional dishes in France, Sweden and elsewhere. Retzius, in his 1806 book Attempt at a Flora, describes how chives are used with pancakes, soups, fish and sandwiches.
