Common zucchini (Cucurbita pepo – Pumpkin, common zucchini).

Its scientific name is pumpkin or zucchini. Its fruits are the well-known zucchini that are eaten cooked in many variations. They contain vitamin C, potassium, vitamin B12, carbohydrates and proteins.

They are collected when they reach a certain size or when they are still relatively small. When they remain on the plant their size increases and in some cases it can reach up to three meters in length. Their flesh then becomes spongy and is used for seed harvesting. In addition to zucchini, flowers are also cooked, usually stuffed with rice. Although there is disagreement in a region of the country about the name “zucchiniflowers” or “zucchini flowers”, in general zucchini flowers are the male flowers of zucchini that grow from the stem of the plant and are longer with a slender stem, while the zucchini are the small flowers at the “top” of the fruit (hence the name).

There are several varieties of common zucchini and these are mainly related to the shape, size and color of the fruit.

The main growing areas in Greece are Ilia, Messinia, Crete and Attica. About 45,000 acres are cultivated and the annual production reaches 70,000 tons.
