The name comes from the Chinese (Mandarin) (. 棵 菜 tā kē cài). Also called: Chinese flat cabbage, rosette pakchoi, spinach mustard or spoon mustard. Other translations also show it as ‘tat soi’, ‘tat choy’.

The plant has dark green spoon-shaped leaves that form a rosette. It has a soft creamy texture and has a delicate but distinct taste.
