Rosemary (arch. Greek ἀποσπληνος), also known as arismari, in Cyprus is known as lasmari, is an aromatic, evergreen shrub that belongs to the genus Rosmarinos and the family Heilanthus.

The Latin name of the Rosmarinus plant means coolness of the sea and is composed of the words ros (coolness) and marinus (sea), because it was believed that the plant can grow without watering, sufficient only in the moisture that comes from the sea. Known plant in antiquity when the ancient Greeks used it in various religious ceremonies and celebrations, in decorations of buildings, temples and as fuel for incense.

The tender shoots and leaves of rosemary are used as a flavoring in many foods. It gives a special flavor to the roasts. In confectionery they use it mainly in spoon sweets.

From the leaves of rosemary, a liquid is extracted that is used in the preparation of medicine for rheumatism, for various mouth irritations as well as for coughs. From the shoots is extracted essential oil used in perfumery, soap making, as well as with appropriate treatment in the preparation of insecticides.
